Studies Show Clear Link Between Testosterone Therapy and Heart Attacks
Testosterone therapy has been found to be harmful, according to a study conducted by the National Institute of Health published Jan. 2014. Researchers have looked at records of over 56 000 older and middle-aged men who have been prescribed testosterone treatments between the period of 2008 and 2010. The study was able to reveal several startling facts:
- Men who were younger than 65 years old and had a history of heart disease were 3 times more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke as a result of testosterone therapy.
- Men who were older than 65, without a previous history of heart disease, were 2 times more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke as a result of testosterone therapy.
The object of study was to see if there were any incidents a year before they began the therapy and 3 months after.
Another study published in Nov. 2013 in the The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that older men, who predominantly had a previous history of heart disease and determined to have low testosterone, had a 30% increase in heart attacks, strokes and in some cases deaths after undertaking low T therapy. The time span was 3 years and the group study was formed of 9000 male veterans, with the mean age being 60 years old.
Injuries Related to Low Testosterone Therapy
Men have reported serious injuries and side effects as a result of using testosterone drugs. Among them are:
- Heart attacks (myocardial infarction)
- Blood clotting and anemia
- Worsening heart failure
- Increased risk of prostate cancer
As new research sheds light on the risks posed by this type of treatment, new side effects and causes might be found to be linked to low testosterone products.
FDA Currently Investigating Testosterone Treatments
Prompted by these two studies, the Federal Drug Administration has announced on Jan. 31 2014 that it was investigating the possibility of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular injuries as a result of using testosterone products. Issued as a safety alert, the agency said it would be reevaluating the safety of low testosterone therapy and related products.
Prescription of Low Testosterone Treatments Unethical?
Testosterone therapy is approved by the FDA only for men who have been diagnosed with a condition associated with low testosterone production. Hypogonadism is the only condition for which testosterone treatments are approved. The PLOS One report that prompted the FDA investigation writes that only 1/4 of the men who were prescribed testosterone therapy had the medical condition to justify such a prescription. The case remains unclear whether the men who were prescribed the blood test were found to have the condition or if they had only taken the test as check mark to be prescribed the low T treatment.
