How does using AndroGel or any other testosterone product increase the risk of cardiovascular complications?

Multiple prominent studies have shown that hormone replacement therapy that involves testosterone products can increase the risk of having a stroke or heart attack by two or three fold. Testosterone supplements cause the body to produce more red blood cells. An increased production of red blood cells can lead to coagulation of the blood. Coagulated blood that is thick or clumpy can lead to complication in the cardiovascular system, which increases the risk of a cardiac event such as a heart attack or stroke. Studies indicate that testosterone drugs increase this risk regardless if the patient has had a prior history of cardiac problems or not.

How long has the link between testosterone products and increased risk of heart complications been known for?

The study published in 2013 in the JAMA and the one conducted by the NIH in 2014 were the ones that showed data from the past decade which indicated a strong link. There was also a federal study conducted in 2009 that intended to analyze the potency of testosterone gel in increasing muscle and strength in older men. The study had to be interrupted when an alarming increase in heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems were seen in the subjects, all of this happening while the study was on-going. Another paper by BMC Medicine in April 2013, which compiled results from other 169 studies, concluded that “testosterone therapy increases cardiovascular-related events among men.”.

Are testosterone products such as AndroGel effective at combating symptoms of old age?

Many clinicians and medical experts are now of the opinion that the risks of taking testosterone drugs far outweigh the benefits. The American Urological Association has warned against using testosterone treatments as there has been no improvement in symptoms of ED coupled with the risk for heart stroke and heart attack. Consumer Reports has also warned against it, saying that there is no conclusive research that would back up the claims made by the manufacturers of such products.

I do not usually sue; what benefit is there in filing such a lawsuit?

If you or a loved one suffered serious injury as a result of testosterone drugs then there might be medical expenses that have to be covered. These expenses can prove to be very costly and the damages might be also financial and emotional in nature. If a member of your family died due to a defective or dangerous drug, no amount of money can undo that wrong. We believe strongly that every injury and harm that is caused by these drugs should be accountable for by the manufacturers who put the products on the market in the first place. When they fail to reply to public concern, greater warnings and pressure must be put on them to curb the behavior. Ultimately, their fear of lawsuit, litigation and settlements that cut into their profits are the ones that motivate them to change. It is unfortunate but it is a fact of life.

Aren’t the majority of drug and product lawsuits just class action lawsuits where each plaintiff receives very little money?

Most of our cases are handled as Multi-District Litigation (MDL), where each plaintiff receives a settlement based upon the individual injuries and damages suffered by each plaintiff.
